Methodology
Six rules, applied to all 99 entries
Every entry starts as a spec sheet: aperture, focal length, ratio, mount type and mass are transcribed from manufacturer data and cross-checked against retail listings before a word is written.
Scores are normalised inside each category, so a 60 mm travel refractor is measured against other travel refractors — not against a 305 mm Dobsonian it was never meant to beat.
Nothing here is perfect. Each page lists the compromises — cool-down time, battery drain, dated hand controllers — because those are what you live with after the unboxing.
Useful magnification, exit pupil and limiting magnitude are computed from aperture and focal length in the calculator above, so claims about what a scope resolves stay arithmetic.
Ranking order is editorial. Affiliate links fund the desk but never buy a position, a score, or a softer set of cons.
Firmware, bundled eyepieces and app support change. Entries are re-checked as manufacturers revise them, and the whole site is regenerated from one data file so a correction lands everywhere.
